Inverters are a necessary component in most solar or wind energy systems. An inverter allows you to run standard 120V AC appliances miles from the electric company's power grid. Using sophisticated electronics and power transistors, they quietly convert the low voltage DC from your batteries into 120V AC used by typical appliances.Modified Sine Wave inverters synthesize a basic form of AC composed of square waves. This is the simplest way to produce AC and results in a relatively inexpensive inverter. For most appliances, this grade of power works fine.However, some sensitive electronic components, some fluorescent lights, and some types of electric motors will not run well on a modified sine wave inverter. For these appliances, you will need a true sine wave inverter, which produces high grade AC electricity identical to the power from your electric company. However, these inverters are much more expensive due to their more complex circuitry.In selecting an inverter, choose the one with a power rating exceeding the maximum possible load you will put on it at any one time.
